Today all our meetings were in the same place, a hotel within walking distance of our lodgings and it was good to stretch our legs a bit. It was also good to make use of the wifi at the hotel and upload some more blog posts. We were meeting a guy called George with experience of NGOs in Kenya particularly in education. He had some good advice.
Then Gerry and Sonal went to meet a director of the hotel chain (Sarova) who run the game camp near the Sekenani school and who have supported Etc and the school over recent years. He is the man with oversight of their CSR – Corporate Social Responsibility. We wanted to ensure we had their support into the future, for the secondary school as well as the ongoing work with the primary school. This was assured dependent on the business plan.
Finally we met Rachel, the deputy manager of the Sarova Mara game camp, who is taking her annual leave here in Nairobi. She was telling us that despite the best efforts of the Game Camp in supporting the school, arranging for guests to visit, who sometimes wish to sponsor individuals or groups of children, the Sekenani head teacher does not always take best advantage of the help he is offered. This is a real problem and the sort of attitude that can make potential helpers and sponsors look elsewhere in order to make a difference. She was encouraged to hear of the progress that has been made though and thinks a girls school there will be a great thing.
In the evening we visited an Indian restaurant in the parklands district of Nairobi which is largely Kenyan Asian. The food was delicious – I am learning so much and trying so many new things! I would recommend Orange, tangerine and carrot juice! Our hosts have been so generous and we have had lots of fun with them.
